to women and girls who are to become women in the future no matter whether this future comes around tomorrow or in ten years. no that i am hairsplitting about who women are. but that i want to include the largest group of women in my greeting so that everyone should be included. :)

 

oscars were declared this morning here though it was sunday night in america. oddly, chinese media was not excited about the oscars this year at all. i vaguely remember that it was all the hype last year and i remember a chinese televsion broadcast the whole thing live last year. but i can be totally wrong about the memory. but it did make me wonder why there is so much hush hush this year. it is not big news at all. even sina didn't closely follow the real situation step by step. only after the whole ceremony was completed did it post the list of winners. not that i cared. i am just curious.

 

nor am i a movie fan. the proof that i am not a movie fan is that i just watched avatar a few days ago. i was impressed by poetry and imagination seen in the setting and the people on pandora (the movie won two oscares for art direction and cinematography): how birds fly, how strange animals hunt, how flowers bloom, how mountains float in the air, how tribe people walk on tree trunks, etc. this part was most gratifying. but the storyline is not so exciting.

 

moreover, the tribe life depicted in the movie i dislike strongly. these peole have no privacy. they don't eat. and why do these tribe people act as warriors in the first place if they are the only people ruling the planet and there are no other tribes they need to fight for dominance of the planet? they don't have poets and musicians and painters and calligraphers among them. the tribe does not look like literate. since no people look as if they can write. the life described and indicated by the film is imperfect and defected. i don't mean these people are not lovely, but by paying no or seriously inadequate attention to these aspects of the people, the movie makes them less lovely and deprives them of some adorable qualities, thus making them seemingly exist only for the story itself. this is my impression of the people in the movie. i can be totally wrong and this probably is not the right way to watch a movie and understand its full value.

 

i am not a movie fan, but i probably will watch winning films and those candidates for the oscars. they must have good things in them so that they are worth the attention and consideration and votes of all these film professionals.
